Considered 'Ancient Chetumal', the Santa Rita Archaeological Reserve was known to be part of the federation of the Maya principalities known as the League of Mayapan, which was ruled by the powerful Cocom family. Not only this but Santa Rita is also known as the place for the famous "the Father of the Mestizos", Gonzalo Guerrero. Producing High quality of cacao, along with marine production, Honey, and Vanilla, Santa Rita had amazing exports.
