AU MOURNS MOGAE, HAILS HIM AS DISTINGUISHED AFRICAN STATESMAN

The African Union Commission has joined a growing chorus of tributes following the passing of former president, Festus Gontebanye Mogae, describing him as a distinguished African statesman whose legacy will continue to inspire generations across the continent.

In a statement, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, expressed profound sorrow at Mogae’s death and extended condolences to the government and people of Botswana, as well as the late leader’s family.

The AU praised Mogae for his steadfast commitment to democratic governance, economic development, and public service during his tenure as Botswana’s president from 1998 to 2008. The continental body also highlighted his contribution to peacebuilding efforts beyond Botswana’s borders, particularly in South Sudan.

Mogae served as Chairperson of the Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (JMEC), where he played a key role in supporting the implementation of South Sudan’s peace agreement and advancing dialogue and reconciliation efforts in the conflict-hit nation.

“Former President Festus Mogae was a respected African statesman whose humility, integrity, and unwavering commitment to peace, democracy, and good governance inspired generations across our continent. Africa has lost a distinguished leader and devoted Pan-Africanist,” Youssouf said in the statement.
