We caught up with Denzel Lightbourne before the studio filled up with everyone else’s schedule for the day. No rehearsed answers, just him leaned back, hands still faintly marked from whatever piece he had been working on before we walked in.

When we asked what the most Bahamian thing about him is that has nothing to do with art, he didn’t hesitate. “I like to fish, I like to sit by the water and just think.” It’s a stillness that seems to follow him even off the canvas.

This month’s cover star Denzel Lightbourne opens up in his own words about creative process, identity, and what grounds him when the work gets loud. This is the sit down we promised, the one where we set the art questions aside and just let him talk.
