History
In the hands of Loris Toppan, owner and operator of Colourlab, a unique digital printing shop, an image can transform from a good
shot into a stunning print. Colourlab's array of specialized printing services, many of which were not previously available locally, offer clients the opportunity to think big, bold and out of the box when it comes time to realizing their digital files on archival papers & canvas. Having been in the graphic design, production and print industry for close to thirty years, Loris Toppan has a wealth of experience and technique at his disposal. Originally trained in Canada in the extremely difficult field of packaging, Loris excelled and quickly developed a reputation for precision and attention to the finest detail. After moving to the island more than 2 decades ago, Loris became senior production manager at one of Bermuda's top design studios, RB&K, where his tremendous skills in colour correcting, restoration, and image enhancement were applied to Annual Reports, advertising campaigns, and other visual promotions. It was in executing these valuable reports and campaigns that Loris developed his interest and expertise in pre-press work. The art of finessing and preparing files for press was something that appealed to his eye for detail as well as fulfilling his creative drive in visual arts. After many years of enjoying the process for business clients, Loris, with his wife Libby, took the leap into pre-press and fine art digital printing for both the private and the business sector and launched Colourlab in 2006, opening the doors of their Paget studio in 2007. To date, Colourlab has built its clientele from local businesses and advertising studios, local artists and photographers and is the 'Official Printer of the Bermuda Society of Arts'. Many of Bermuda's top professional photographers are Colourlab's clients and they value having a printer of this calibre available locally. Loris is especially acclaimed for his skill in printing official portraits and has been entrusted with the photographs of local dignitaries, politicians, officials and luminaries, such as past Premiers Alex Scott and Dr. Ewart Brown, current Premier David Burt, U.S. Consul General Gregory Slayton, and the memorial portrait of the late Dame Lois Browne-Evans shown at City Hall. In addition to the skills of its operator, Colourlab has virtually unlimited fine art printing capabilities with the capacity to provide border-less enlargements as large as 44" x 100' on a diverse range of hand selected and tested materials suitable for Bermuda's climate, from gloss photo to matte watercolour paper to canvas. The combination of archival papers and inks lends prints a lifespan of more than 100 years! (This is in accordance with studies by Wilhelm Imaging Research). While continuing to offer pre-press services for books, annual reports and brochures, Colourlab focuses on the needs within the photographic, fine art and graphic design community. Loris also welcomes amateur photographers and the discerning general public, providing accurate and predicable digital prints and files in addition to corrective and image enhancement services, including colour correction, photo enhancement and even photo restoration.
