Minister Alexa Lightbourne stated:
"Workforce Competence...
To bring people on the journey, our workforce must be prepared for the transition. This removes reliance on external expertise; electricians, solar installers, energy auditors, battery technicians, grid operators, data specialists, supervisors, inspectors, and project managers. Before forging ahead with change at scale, we must equip Bermudians with the skills to build and maintain these systems. This is how resources remain at home, show tangible investment in our people, deliver lower bills and better service. "
Now let's go back to the closure of the Fairmont Southampton hotel and the announcement of it's anticipated reopening...
At what point within this 5 year period was there a push for talent sourcing, skills training/education, awareness of career opportunities...simple readiness?
There has been no announcement (that I have been made aware of and please point me in that direction of info if I speak put of turn) of (1) exactly how many attended the "recruitment drive" this summer, (2) how many remained in the industry during this period but now seek this new opportunity, (3) how many are already employed, in another industry, but are seeking new opportunities, (4) if there were any persons educating themselves, upskilling for this opening, (5) how many were recent graduates eager to start their career.
At the end of the day, I guess my only question should be: How many Bermudians have actively made themselves ready to be one of the hundreds of employees of this NEW Princess Hotel?
I've been making this 📣 call but have not seen any movement towards readiness.
What I continue to see is: Resumes that are not up to date Resumes with unexplained gaps Contact information that is not current Phone numbers that are out of order Applicants not following the instructions within the advertisement:
- provide recent WRITTEN employment references does not mean simply providing the name of someone, it means a letter.
- if you have NEVER held a role similar to the one being advertised, include a letter to explain how/why you should be considered for the post anyway.
- submit your resume/application package according to the options in the advertisement. Short cuts, is not a sign of creativity, you will be marked for not following instructions and not considered an applicant. Example, sending the resume to an email (main office email) when the business has a specific recruitment or jobs email (that was identified in the advert) OR delivering the resume to the office when the advert clearly says to not to.
- not following instructions by NOT providing references
- not providing a resume when one is required to be submitted
- being a NO SHOW for an interview WILL mark you as unreliable.
Simply put, applicants are not caring about their job search and how they are presenting themselves. The above issues should NOT be concerns in 2025!
There appears to be the expectation (or entitlement) that they are Bermudian and therefore must be considered for employment whether instructions are followed or not.
..And here we are again, with another hotel being refurbished...I repeat my call
📣ARE YOU GETTING READY?📣
Now, as Minister Lightbourne suggests, "...our workforce must be prepared for the transition...electricians, solar installers, energy auditors, battery technicians, grid operators, data specialists, supervisors, inspectors, and project managers..."
I don't profess to have a crystal ball, but maybe someone should!
Many young Bermudians are abroad studying subjects because they enjoy the subject matter. Maybe their educational focus can be successful if they were aware of the needs within these fields. They may be young adults in age but not in exposure or experience... 'they don't know what they don't know'. In addition, there may be some young adults who could not afford to study abroad. How do are they made aware of these growing opportunities? How can they be encouraged to pivot their education?
As a small business owner I remain hopeful that the light would switch on.
As Executemps Ltd. advertises for vacancies and assists employers with work permits, I have not seen that light switch on as of yet. Employers rely on our expertise to fill their vacancies and truth be told, they want dependable, reliable, motivated, energetic, focused, friendly and switched on employees who have a positive work ethic.
What does this mean?
Showing up to work, when it is raining (yes this is a thing!) Getting to work early (arriving on time truly means that you are already late!) If customer facing, must remember that the next customer may be your next employer. Wearing company issued uniform or company compliant attire (and not that of your previous employer OR your personal side business) - yes that is a thing too!
If you are a job seeker, I hope this food for thought will get you back on track.
If you are a developer or maker of new and progressive opportunities, be encouraged to promote the importance of readiness long before you need to fill your anticipated vacancies.
