The Future That Never Happened.
Kisho Kurokawa designed these capsules to be removable. The idea was simple: every 25 years, you could unbolt your apartment and replace it with a newer model, just like upgrading a car or a battery.
But there was a fatal engineering oversight. The capsules were attached to the central concrete core in a sequence that made individual removal nearly impossible. To replace a capsule on a lower level, you would often have to remove the ones above it first.
The result? In 50 years, not a single capsule was ever replaced or updated. The tower stood as a rusting monument to a Metabolist dream that couldn't survive reality, until its demolition in 2022.
