VISIT OF US AMBASSADOR PETER HAAS TO CHAKMA RAJ OFFICE

We were pleased to receive at the Chakma Raj Office in Rangamati today, the US Ambassador Peter D Haas, Madame Amy Haas and other members of the US Mission and USAID in Dhaka.

A briefing on the history of the three Circles of the CHT, their roles and functions and the current opportunities and challenges faced by the people of the Chakma Circle were presented.

Among the OPPORTUNITIES mentioned were the traditional self-help customs of MALEYA and BHAAT MAWZA , the strengthened role of FEMALE KARBARI (Village Chiefs) in dispute resolution and development, the strengths of VILLAGE COMMON FOREST (VCF) communities and the spiritual traditions of Forest and Water Conservation, including for HAZA (Mineral Salt Licks).

Among the CHALLENGES , attention was drawn to the havoc caused by the KAPTAI DAM, the large number of INTERNALLY DISPLACED PERSONS and the recent phenomena of a RODENT CRISIS caused by the flowering of three species of bamboo (Midinga, Dulu and Parbuo) causing rats to consume cultivated rice and squirrels to consume Broom plants. This is causing food shortage and economic problems in the Sajek Valley, among others.

The Mission was urged to extend its support for conservation in the CHT with a stronger role for the traditional institutions.
