What Breaks After an Expo 54 / ReactNative 0.81 Upgrade (and What Play Store Policies Forced Us to Change) - Elo - Simplified Software & Cloud Solutions for Businesses 06/01/2026

Upgrades are supposed to be boring. Ours turned into a full-on debugging marathon. 😅

We upgraded a production app to Expo SDK 54 and React Native 0.81 and the UI regressed in multiple places:

• Text clipping / unexpected wrapping
• Bottom tabs misbehaving on gesture navigation
• Safe-area overlap with sticky buttons
• Android 12+ splash and launcher asset issues

And while we were fixing that, Play Store policies added more pressure:

• Target SDK 35 updates
• 16 KB page size compatibility readiness
• Toolchain upgrades (Gradle + NDK) to keep builds and Play Console happy

We wrote a practical breakdown of what broke, why it broke, and the fixes that made everything stable again.
