Poka Yoke in the Garments Industry
Poka Yoke is a Japanese term that means "mistake-proofing" or "error prevention." In the garments industry, it helps reduce human errors, improve quality, and minimize rework or rejection by preventing defects before they occur.
Common Applications of Poka Yoke in Garment Production:
1. Preventing Fabric Cutting Errors
Issue: Cutting fabric in the wrong direction (e.g., against the grain).
Solution: Use cutting templates or guides to ensure fabric is aligned and cut correctly.
2. Avoiding Wrong Stitching (e.g., left sleeve on the right)
Issue: Sewing left parts on the right side or vice versa.
Solution: Use color coding or labeled components so operators can easily identify left/right parts.
3. Incorrect Button or Zipper Attachment
Issue: Attaching buttons/zippers in the wrong position.
Solution: Use jigs, fixtures, or placement guides that only allow installation in the correct spot.
4. Missing Parts (e.g., labels, tags, buttons)
Issue: Forgetting to attach a necessary component.
Solution: Use checklists, counters, or sensors at the final inspection stage to detect missing items.
5. Size Mixing Errors in Packing
Issue: Different sizes mixed in one pack or carton.
Solution: Implement barcode or RFID scanning, or use color-coded size tags to prevent mix-ups.
