đ Breaking: Google just ran the biggest SEO experiment of 2026.
And the results are brutal if you weren't paying attention.
The March 2026 Core Update began rolling out on March 27. Semrush's volatility sensor hit 8.7 out of 10, the highest score ever recorded for a core update. Within 72 hours, rank-tracking tools showed volatility 3.2x higher than in the December 2025 update.
Here's what the data actually shows:
đ´ The Losers: AI content farms dropped 60â80% in organic traffic. Affiliate sites took the hardest hit across all categories â a 71% negative impact. Thin comparison pages without genuine product testing? Gone.
đĸ The Winners: Sites publishing original research, proprietary data, and first-hand case studies saw an average visibility gain of 22%. A single original data point is proving more valuable than dozens of rewritten articles.
The signal Google sent is impossible to ignore:
Google is now better at distinguishing between AI-assisted and fully automated content. Content that simply summarizes existing top-ranking pages is losing visibility.
There's also something bigger happening under the surface.
The March 2026 update is tightening the correlation between AI Mode citations and organic rankings. The sites winning the update are also being cited more in Google's AI responses.

2. Identify your top 5 dropped pages â ask: "Does this page contain anything that exists NOWHERE else on the internet?"
3. If the answer is no, that's your problem, and your opportunity
The update is still stabilizing. Full recovery usually occurs during the next core update, but smaller ranking boosts can occur in between updates due to Google's continuous algorithm refreshes.
Don't wait for the next update to start building real authority.
The question isn't whether Google got better at this.
