Jahanara Imam- Story of a Bangladeshi Hero

Jahanara Imam was born to a prominent Muslim family in 1929 at Murshidabad. She was an excellent student who passed her Matriculation in 1942 and her BA from Lady Brabourne University in 1947. In 1949, Jahanara Imam married an engineer by the name of Shariful Alam. Following her marriage, she pursued a career in teaching. In 1964, she was recipient of Fullbright Scholarship and went to the United States of America to pursue higher education.

In 1971, her son, Rumi ran away from home to join the fight for liberation of Bangladesh. During the 9 months of war, she noted her observation and fear of losing her son in her personal diary. Her husband was also taken for questioning by the Pakistan Army and soon died after his return.

After the war, when her son's friends returned from war without Rumi, her worst fears came to life. Her son's freedom fighter friends bestowed upon her the title "Shaheed Janani," mother of a martyr. In 1986, Jahanara Imam published her diary, now commonly known as "Ekattorer Dinguli."

Despite losing her beloved son and husband, her patriotism and determination did not deter. She has continued to write many more novels as well as poetry. In 1992, as collaborators of Pakistani Army were beginning to rise to prominence, she founded the Ghatak-Dalal Nirmul Committee to hold them accountable for their crimes. Jahanara Imam died in Dhaka on 26th June, 1994. On that day, Bangladeshis lost a great patriot who has sacrificed her most beloved husband and son for the cause of liberation of Bangladesh.
