Severe acute pancreatitis-এ pancreas থেকে প্রচুর digestive enzyme বের হয়ে যায়, বিশেষ করে lipase।
এই lipase abdominal fat tissue ভেঙে দেয় → fat necrosis হয়।
এরপর damaged fat tissue থেকে বের হওয়া free fatty acid শরীরের calcium এর সাথে bind করে calcium soap তৈরি করে।
এই process-টাকেই বলে fat saponification।
ফলে blood এ free calcium কমে যায় → hypocalcemia develops।
