Why Marine Engineers have purple stripes on their Epaulette Shoulder???
This epaulette with purple bars was bestowed by England Queen Elizabeth 2 to all Commonwealth Engineers in memory of a group of Engineers of RMS TITANIC in April 1912, who sacrificed their life in engine room to keep the electric generator running. SOS signals were successfully sent out to the surrounding nearby ships to come to the aids of the sinking ship because of their unselfish action. Unfortunately, the engineers were trapped and drown, and non of them survived. Until today, all commonwealth Marine and Aviation Engineers still wear this purple bars with pride in memory of this group of unsung heroes.
