New report points to coexistence lifting productivity 📑

A national report released today by Modifying Factors calls for a national policy to address the rising tensions between renewable projects and the mining and agricultural industries.

The rapid expansion of renewables has seen the banking of large parcels of land, often with no guarantees of development. This results in locking out the established sectors and potentially steralising the land for future use.

AMEC Chief Executive Warren Pearce said, “Our exploration and mining companies don’t have that luxury. If you’re not making progress, you lose your ground. Use it or lose it."

“This is not about stopping renewables. It’s about making sure all projects, across all sectors, follow the same fair process, so we can get on with building a productive future."

“It’s time to level the playing field."

The report identifies a clear objective to deal with the issue: a co-ordinated national policy response, to turn this emerging crisis into an opportunity for co-operation.

Report author Geoff Deans said, "Complex problems need to be defined and framed. Our research demonstrates there is a real opportunity to transition from the mindset of exclusivity to productivity."

Land is fundamental to Australia’s commerce, culture, and community. It feeds us, powers us, and sustains entire regions. But the current approach is leading to congestion, conflict, and costly delays.

More support needed for minerals exploration in Australia.

Today’s Federal Budget 2025-26 announcement has missed an opportunity to demonstrate support for the minerals exploration industry.

AMEC has been calling on the Australian Government to extend the JMEI after it reached its conclusion, when the final year of allocations were awarded to companies in June 2024 for the FY 2024-25.

Chief Executive Officer, Warren Pearce said, “After eight years of a successful program, we’ve been working with the government to evolve the incentive to be even more impactful.

“We are expecting that both major parties will address measures in the upcoming election to support the exploration sector in Australia, because without exploration you can’t find the mines of the future.

“The JMEI is a proven program that supports junior exploration companies and is a substantial contributor to Australia’s economy and government revenue."

NEW POLL 📊

A poll by Painted Dog Research and commissioned by AMEC, reveals the majority of West Australians support lifting the ban on uranium mining.

57% of respondents said 'Yes' to lifting the ban put in place in 2017. A previous industry poll from 2023 showed at 49% supported uranium mining.

AMEC Chief Executive Warren Pearce said, “What this poll demonstrates, is that West Australians can see the value in uranium mining for our economy and our state."

“It also points to a community understanding that WA is a mining state, with the professionalism and skill to deal with uranium mining in a safe and responsible way."

Mr Pearce also called on WA Labor to "Reconsider the current ban and move with the times.”

The poll comes at time of strong global demand for uranium, fuelled in large part by the global push for decarbonised energy and emissions reduction, the current policy position, from eight years ago, no longer makes any sense.
