As we launched National Skills Week in NSW last Wednesday, it was fantastic to hear the keynote address from NSW Minister for Skills, TAFE and Tertiary Education, The Hon. Steve Whan MP.
When speaking on National Skills Week before the launch, Minister Whan said “The NSW government is on board with a 1000 apprenticeships and trainees within our organisations and 1300 more in local government. The training we offer through our TAFEs and RTOs is absolutely vital."
TAFE NSW Managing Director Stephen Brady said “Vocational education is for every Australian, whether they’re beginning their career, taking it to the next level, or changing careers.”

National Skills Week is a week to celebrate the opportunities VET provides, and to shine a spotlight on those leading the way.
All Purpose Transport is a great example of how industry is changing the game within VET, creating game changing pathways and opportunities for apprentices and employees.
One of Queensland’s largest privately-owned transport companies, All Purpose Transport, won 2023 Medium Employer of the Year at the Queensland Training Awards.
In 2012 it launched a workforce development program, Project APT, with the aim that every employee would earn a qualification from TAFE Queensland. Now in its 11th year, 500 workers have earned a certificate III-level qualification or higher in their field of expertise.
It's fantastic to see industry changing the lives of those around them.

Could a career in Technology, be a game changer for you?
Australia’s technology sector needs so many more skilled workers that supply cannot currently keep up with the pace of demand.
The Future Skills Organisation’s Technology Workforce Plan reveals, that more than 25,000 workers are required in the next five years to work directly in the technology industry.
“VET has been an absolute game changer for me because it’s kickstarted my career. I now have a stable job in a career I want to be in, doing all the work that I want to be doing and absolutely loving it. I was 15 when I started and I was hired by my employer at 16 years old - that doesn’t normally happen.” - Kai Baharthah-King, 2023 Western Australia Vocational Student of the Year.
As technologies are rapidly evolving, a worker’s skills can quickly become outdated if they do not have work experience. Traineeships, such as those offered by group training organisation MEGT, can help students combine work with their vocational study.
