Not every beautiful piece was made for the wealthy.

This Victorian mourning necklace tells the story of a middle-class woman who wanted to dress with elegance, even when natural pearls were beyond her reach. Before cultured pearls changed the jewellery world, imitation pearls were often the only way for many women to achieve the refined look they admired.

The necklace is finished with a delicate 9ct gold clasp, set with tiny seed pearls and a garnet—a reminder that even modest jewellery was crafted with care, pride, and meaning.

Bree and I found ourselves asking a question that so many antique lovers face…

Do we preserve it exactly as it has survived for over a century, honouring the life it has already lived and finding the right custodian to cherish its history?

Or do we restore it with beautiful Akoya pearls, giving it a second life as a wearable piece for another generation?

There isn’t a right or wrong answer. One path protects history. The other keeps history alive through everyday wear.

I’d love to hear what you’d do.

💬 Would you:
A) Preserve it exactly as it is.
B) Restore it with Akoya pearls and let it shine again.

Tell me why in the comments—I have a feeling this one will divide opinion.
