A doula (Greek for ‘women who serve’) is a professional support person employed by a pregnant woman. Doulas offer informational, emotional and physical assistance to a family before, during and after childbirth. Doulas are experienced in being with women during labour and are open-minded and relaxed about birth. A doula will support your birth choices and will ensure a mother and father feel informed and unpressured when making decisions. A woman who has employed a doula for birth support will receive continuous hands-on nurturing and encouragement including massage and affirming words. The doula is also experienced in handling babies and will provide gentle direction and suggestions on the care of your baby if she is employed post-natally.
