Steps to paint a water damaged ceiling:
1. Ensure the leak has been fixed and dry
2. Sand and dust the surface
3. Apply 2x coats of stain sealer to the damaged area
4. Apply a ceiling flat paint on cornice and around lights and vents with a brush
5. Apply ceiling flat to the remaining surface with a roller
6. Repeat step 5 ensuring that the final coat is rolled in the direction that sunlight enters the room.
Without the professional tools, drop-sheets and paint needed it may be cheaper (and faster) to hire a professional for a small job like this.
