The ATO processes most BAS refunds smoothly, but some are held for review to verify details, not to assume wrongdoing. These checks often happen when a refund is unusually large or looks different from past reporting.
From 1 July 2025, the ATO has 30 days (up from 14) to notify taxpayers if a refund is being reviewed. This extra time helps address high-risk or fraudulent claims. Genuine refunds aren’t affected, and interest still applies on refunds held for more than 14 days.
