Redcliffe State Emergency Service - SES
13/03/2025
It's been a busy period for Redcliffe SES responding to Tropical Cyclone Alfred. Our tasks ranged from doorknocking to sandbagging, tarping roofs and of course, clearing many downed trees. It was also great to work with other SES crews within Moreton Bay State Emergency Service, other parts of Queensland, and from the ACT and WA.

๐ How to Properly Sandbag Your Property Against Flooding ๐
Floodwaters can rise quickly, but proper sandbagging can help protect your home. Follow these steps to create an effective barrier:
๐ธ Step 1: Gather Supplies
Sandbags (filled โ
full with sand or soil or as much as you can safely lift)
Plastic sheeting
๐ธ Step 2: Prepare the Area
Clear debris & level the ground where the bags will go
Place plastic sheeting along doorways for added protection
๐ธ Step 3: Lay the Sandbags
First layer: Lay bags in a staggered brick pattern, overlapping each slightly. Do not tie the sandbags โ roll the top underneath the bag
Stacking: Tightly compact each layer & offset the seams
Tamping: Press bags down to eliminate gaps
๐ธStep 4: Secure the Barrier
If using plastic sheeting, extend it over the sandbags & weigh it down
Check for leaks & reinforce weak spots
โ ๏ธ Important Tips
Never overfill bagsโthey should be flexible for stacking
Only use fresh, dry sandbags (wet bags lose effectiveness)
Focus on doorways & low-lying areas first
Stay safe & be prepared! ๐จ๐
