Empty Plates
———————
Last two years have been rollercoaster of a ride for my wife and me. In business, we get to learn a lot of management lessons. We need to be like a sponge to soak those nuggets of wisdom. Today, we received one such nugget.
One of the cleaning staff members is a good friend of us, and he is genuinely interested in seeing us grow and has given us lots of advices over the last two years.
Today he was enquiring me whether today had been a busy day. I told him we were just getting busier during the weekends over the past few weeks. He acknowledged it and told me he had been seeing a lot of new faces buying from us and he thought we were getting better in running the shop. His observation was spot on, as we are noticing new customers from distant places like Ballarat, Ferntree Gully etc. He also observed something else.
He said “I’m seeing a lot of empty plates from your shop. Even the small containers in the thali plates are empty. I bet your food is good and customers are not wasting much. As long as you’re getting empty plates back in your kitchen, you can be sure that you’re doing well.”
What a piece of wisdom! My chef checks for the items that are not finished and takes mental notes about them to either improve or not make them again. But this person was measuring our quality from outside!!! Now I’ll be doing the same as well!
Thanks a lot for your continuous support!
