Dwellingup showed us exactly what it means to be a Trail Town 👏 On Monday, local businesses and community members hit ‘The Mack’ trail to experience Dwellingup through a trail visitor’s eyes and explore how trails connect people to place, stories and local businesses.

From trail-side conversations with guest speakers to an interactive workshop, the day was all about understanding the full trail experience.... “Seeing our local trails through a visitor’s eyes is so valuable. It’s about sharing what we know creating a better experience for everyone."

A huge thanks to everyone who joined us and to the Shire of Murray for partnering on the day. Special thanks to the support from WA Government for the grant funding provided to the Shire.

Bravo Dwellingup for continuing to lead the way as a WA Trail Town 💚

The Hippo’s Yawn Trail at Wave Rock near Hyden is a must-do when exploring WA’s Wheatbelt. This easy, 1.7km loop trail leads you to a unique and quirky granite formation that looks just like a yawning hippo – and it’s just as impressive up close! 🦛

Hippo’s Yawn is a striking granite tor that was once part of the larger rock formation, now weathered over millions of years into a cave-like shape resembling a yawning hippo. The “mouth” rises around 13 metres high, showcasing the incredible natural processes that have shaped this ancient landscape.

The walk winds through native bush, with sections of casuarina trees and sweeping granite outcrops. Autumn and winter bring a quieter kind of beauty to the trail 🌿 Keep an eye out for delicate ground orchids, including greenhoods and spider orchids, along with other seasonal wildflowers beginning to emerge.

With picnic areas, a visitor centre and camping facilities nearby, it’s easy to turn your visit into a great day out in the Wheatbelt. Don’t forget your camera – this is one rock formation you won’t see anywhere else! 📸

Golden orb-weavers: beautiful from a distance, deeply unnecessary at face height.
If you’ve been out on WA trails lately, chances are you’ve spotted their handiwork... or accidentally become part of it. Orb weaver spiders build large wheel-shaped webs, and those threads can look yellow, cream or even golden when the sunlight hits just right.
They’re impressive little engineers too. Spider silk is incredibly strong and flexible for its weight, which helps the web absorb the impact of flying insects.
If you spot the spider in the middle, the larger one is usually the female. The males are tiny by comparison and often much harder to notice.
The good news: despite the dramatic setup, golden orb-weavers are not aggressive and are considered harmless to humans, though a bite can still be painful and may cause mild local symptoms.
And while there are plenty still around right now, the big females are usually nearing the end of their season come winter.
So whether you’re walking, riding or running, take a second to look up next time you’re on the trail.
Or don’t, and enjoy this classic WA rite of passage.

Have you spotted one lately? 🕸️🕷️🕷️🕷️🕸️
