Is it muscle, or is it joint?
That one question determines everything about how a jaw pain presentation should be treated — and in 30 years of clinical practice, it's still one of the most commonly misjudged distinctions I see across massage, myotherapy, physiotherapy, chiropractic, and dental practice.
Get it wrong, and you're treating the wrong structure. Miss a red flag, and you're treating something that needed a referral instead.
I've put together a free clinical quick-reference checklist to help allied health practitioners screen jaw pain and bruxism presentations in under 5 minutes:
→ 5 signs pointing to muscle-driven (myogenous) involvement → 5 signs pointing to joint-based TMJ involvement → A red-flag checklist for when to refer before you treat
If TMJ and jaw pain show up in your caseload, this is worth 5 minutes.
