Sensorium Theatre

Sometimes the biggest moments are the quietest ones.
A child making eye contact.
A burst of laughter.
A moment of calm.
A parent seeing their child connect with the world in a new way.
These are the moments Sensorium creates through multi-sensory theatre experiences designed specifically for children with disability and their families.
We make the difference you imagine.
As EOFY approaches, your support helps us continue to bring joy, connection and creativity to the children who need it most.
Every donation helps us create spaces where all children can belong.
Donations over $2 are tax-deductible. Please visit: https://www.givenow.com.au/sensoriumtheatre

One of the greatest gifts of working at Sensorium is hearing from parents and families about the impact our work has had on their children.
For many of the children we work with, traditional theatre experiences can feel inaccessible or overwhelming. Through our multi-sensory performances and storytelling experiences, families often tell us they are seeing their child respond in new and unexpected ways.
Sometimes it’s a smile. Sometimes it’s eye contact. Sometimes it’s a moment of calm, joy or confidence that a family hasn’t seen before.
These moments matter.
They remind us that every child deserves opportunities for creativity, connection and wonder.
As we approach the end of the financial year, we’re inviting our community to help us continue creating transformative sensory theatre experiences for children with disability and their families.
Your support helps us reach more schools, more communities and more families who deserve to feel seen, welcomed and included.

These are the beautiful words Adelaide mother, Tara Force, wrote in May last year:
Today was huge for us.
It has been 6 years since we have successfully taken Emma out in the community.
Having a child with disability is hard enough but, the realisation we were 'too special' to even participate in special needs activities was next level soul crushing.
Too much. Too complex. Too different - even within our own community.
I know some of you relate to this.
Today we tried again.....
When we arrived at a new place, she refused to walk in the door.
She paced. She growled. She threw a shoe.
This is what anxiety looks like for Emma.
I was fully prepared to leave but, staff continued to gently attempt to engage her and I knew she would love it if we could just get her inside!
After 15 minutes I was about to give up but, she decided she was ready and walked in the door happy & smiling.
She sat at the back with the sensory play and asked for my phone.
Emma uses my phone (or tablet) to regulate & we use it to support transitions. I gave it to her. You could visibly see the anxiety lift as she watched 'Peppa Pig' - a familiar face in an unfamiliar environment.
Slowly, she began to lift her eyes from the screen to glance tentatively at the show particularly when there was music. She tapped her leg to the beat. Girls got rhythm. ♫
Eventually, she abandoned the phone - stood up and took the hand of the staff member who had sat next to her (with a calming & gentle presence) the whole time and joined the group.
Over 45 minutes of transition and a few hairy moments.....but, we got there and the pure JOY on her face was worth it!
I can't recommend this show (and the amazing staff) highly enough Sensorium Theatre.
Today was a powerful reminder to keep holding on to hope.
As a family, we face so many things that often feel overwhelmingly impossible — and yet, today, one of those impossibilities became possible.
