Alcohol and Weight Management
Regular alcohol consumption is associated with weight gain through various ways. When alcohol is consumed, it is absorbed through the stomach into our blood stream and goes to the liver to get metabolized
Our liver uses enzymes to break down the alcohol into metabolites, or smaller molecules, with its end-product being fatty acids which then gets stored in the body as fat. The enzymes that are used to metabolize alcohol are the same ones used to metabolize fat
Since alcohol is a toxin for our body, our body will metabolize the alcohol first over fat to get rid of the alcohol as fast as it can. This means when our body is metabolizing alcohol, it stops burning fat and promotes fat storage
Consuming alcohol also increases your total calorie intake by two ways: the calories in the alcohol itself (1g of alcohol contains 7 calories) and calories from the mixers used
Alcohol also increases hunger and decreases satiety, or fullness, which can lead to overeating and therefore weight gain. It can also lead to cravings for salty and greasy foods, making you want to choose those unhealthier choices
