Diamond cores for concrete analysis commonly have diameters from 30mm to 150mm.
A 30mm core are adequate when the core is to be studied by XRD or SEM but is not suitable for chloride or sulphate analysis of concrete with 20mm aggregate as the samples aggregate: cement ratio may not be representative. If a 30mm core is to be used for chemical analysis take 3cores and combine cores for chemical analysis to provide a representative sample
50mm diameter cores provide sufficient area to give representative samples for chemical analysis.
Often it is preferable to cut a core in half longitudinally and use one half for chloride analysis and one half for cement content analysis. 75mm diameter core provide sufficient cross-sectional surface area that both halves of the core will give representative samples.
100mm cores are preferred for diffusion, permeability and strength testing.
