The pensioner who left his multimillion-dollar view to feed the homeless — The Sydney Morning Herald 24/09/2023

What a bloody legend. 😀

The pensioner who left his multimillion-dollar view to feed the homeless — The Sydney Morning Herald Malcolm Mawhinney’s home was held together by weeds and pigeon droppings, according to his friends. But it has proved quite the windfall for the Rev Bill Crews Foundation.

Our producer Aden Date is also a social impact evaluator. Here’s his evaluation of Do You Know Me, based on 33 surveys returned to us by audience members. Thanks to those of you who responded. These responses will help us so much with future funding and marketing.

Do You Know Me Impact Evaluation
Do You Know Me was assessed using a follow-up survey, delivered within 24 hours of the performance to the e-mail address of the ticket purchaser. We collected 33 responses across the season, approximately a 15% response rate.
The criteria by which we assessed the performance, and the mean score (maximum 100) for each criterion were as follows:
Distinctiveness: It was different from things I've experienced before
87
Challenge: It challenged me to think in a different way
78
Meaning: It moved and inspired me
89
Insight: It helped me gain new insight or knowledge
80
Worldview: It helped me to understand something new about the world
76
Risk: The artists were not afraid to try new things
89
Local Impact: It's important that it's happening here
95

The high scores on Local Impact, Risk, Meaning, and Distinctiveness. Comparatively lower scores on ‘Challenge’ and ‘Worldview’ suggest the play’s main impact was emotional and transformative, rather than educational in the informational sense. These scores aligned with our efforts to produce site-responsive theatre that changed public sentiment around a major social issue.
We also assessed Net Promoter Scores with the question “How likely is it that you would recommend future events by Epiphany Productions to friends or colleagues?” The average score was 8.8 with 29 of 34 responders providing a rating of 9 or above. This is a very good result.
We also allowed people to make comments on the survey. Here were a few highlights:
• This was a really excellent performance. At times it was difficult to see the line between the actors and reality. Congratulations to the actors, production team and everyone involved.
• The actors were excellent. I had trouble distinguishing reality from the acting which was amazing. I was very moved and was quite emotional when it finished. Well done to all involved!
• Fantastic work by all involved. Having been exposed to some of the characters situations myself i.e. drug/alcohol abuse, mental illness, sexual abuse, the performance struck a very raw spot in my soul. While we all know in our minds why some people are homeless, it’s tough to watch it "firsthand" through the performance. Kudos to the actors and the writer of this!!
• It was a really powerful piece and I was quite emotional afterwards. Still thinking about it weeks later.
• I now say hi to homeless people.

As part of the production we also asked people to have a conversation with a homeless person over the coming months. We will follow up with our audiences in May to assess the longer-term transformative impacts and to see if they did indeed end up having a conversation with a rough sleeper. Please reach out directly to [email protected] in late May if you are interested in this data.
