A parade of women with beautiful hair and elegant kimonos proudly walked through the Gion District for the Kushi Matsuri (comb festival) last month.

The Kushi Matsuri is a ritual which honors decorative combs used in traditional Japanese hair styling.The ceremony blesses and honors worn out combs and hair decorations, a way of saying ‘thank you’ for their hard work.

The ritual started from Yasui Konpiragu shrine in the Gion district, where officials made a speech about the significance of the combs and talked about the Parade’s tradition. The dance performance by the Geiko, attracted a wave of camera enthusiasts who snapped away as the Geiko gracefully danced away to the music.
