Toot toot if you own a business and didn’t automatically think “but I pay them for those 8 hours a day.” You’re already a step ahead of the curve.

Common sense to some, controversial to others, but here’s my take:

1. Money buys your team’s time. It doesn’t buy their loyalty or their passion.

2. If your team are only staying for the money, you’ve got a culture problem.

3. The perception of value changes over time. Incentive programs and career pathways have to evolve with it. Now more than ever.

4. Believing your longest “serving” (ew) team member wouldn’t leave for more money after all these years is naivety.

5. Every person on your team has their own dreams, ambitions, motivators, frustrations, roadblocks, family, culture, life experience. It’s your job to know them on a human level and create the opportunity for them to thrive. They’re choosing to give their 8 hours to you instead of someone else with the same amount of cash.

So a genuine question for the business owners:

What’s the one thing your best people would say makes their hours with you worth giving up?
