Luisa Hansal presents her second solo exhibition at the gallery with ‘Upward rush of devotion’. Luisa has long used her meditative painting practice as a means of soul searching, the closely focused and laborious techniques providing a process for her to ruminate on knotty emotions, beliefs and other self-knowledge. Luisa’s paintings have served her as a lifelong enquiry into joyous personal attachments to others, and its shadow - grief. Sitting with the knowledge that loss is impending, what is the key that will make us found? What if it could be as close as one colour away?
In the theosophical text ‘Thought-Forms’ (1905) Annie Besant and C.W. Leadbeater outline a spiritualist symbology for the visualistion of thoughts and feelings. One shape they posit, a sharp blue cone pointing directly upwards, represents possessing a strong single point of devotion to a person or idea.
Inspired by this upward rush of devotion thought-form and the work of female spiritualist and mystic painters such as Agnes Pelton, Georgiana Houghton and Annie Besant herself, Luisa presents new ethereal paintings and sculptures that capture the fringe of consciousness, where the boundaries between knowledge and the imagination blur.
