Mount Isa Mines Rodeo 2023
06/08/2023
It's almost that time of year again - the Mount Isa Mines Rodeo 20232023 kicks off this Thursday, August 10! This week we're taking a look back at the first ever Mount Isa Rodeo, held at Kalkadoon Park (Spear Creek) in September 1959. ๐ค Mount Isa Mines Rodeo 20232023
Presenting the prizes to the winning cowboys is Sir James Foots, the then-general manager of Mount Isa Mines.
Kalkadoon Park, on the Barkly Highway north of Mount Isa near the airport, was the venue for both the Mount Isa Rodeo and the Mount Isa Show (as well as other community events) for several decades, until the facility was closed and the events were moved to Buchanan Park in 2007. The structures within Kalkadoon Park were dismantled and removed, and the area was integrated into the airport's land.
Run by a local Rotary Club for several decades and supported by Mount Isa Mines, the Isa Rodeo has grown significantly over the years. Today, the Mount Isa Mines Isa Rodeo is recognised as the biggest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. ๐๐
This year's event will be held from Thursday, August 10, to Sunday, August 13, at Buchanan Park.
The Council-organised Mount Isa Street Festival and Street Parade in the Mount Isa CBD (centred on West Street and Rodeo Drive) is run during Rodeo Week and will be held on Wednesday, August 9, from about 6pm.
This year it's celebrating the city's 100th anniversary, with Aussie rock legend Daryl Braithwaite headlining the entertainment at 7pm, followed by Aussie ABBA tribute act Bjorn Again.
There will also be a Sideshow Alley, food and market stalls, entertainment, and two fireworks displays, at 8.15pm and just before 10pm.
The Street Parade will start at 6pm and will begin from the Isa Street Bridge roundabout, before making its way to the northern section of Miles Street in the CBD.
