This is a quick chat about 4 books that I'm reading at the moment.

"Amsterdam" - Ian McEwen
"Charles Dickens" - Una Pope-Hennessy
"The Count of Monte Cristo" - Alexander Dumas
"Journal (1889 - 1949)" - Andre Gide

If you're reading them or have read them in the past, I'd love to hear what you think.

Amsterdam - I'm reading this for the 2nd time and I don't really enjoy it. Very good book, definitely worth ready. It's just not to my taste.

Charles Dickins - Terrific biography although the language is a product of its time (1945) and seems a bit jarring at times. The author also reflects on Dickens as someone who died relatively recently so she has a different perspective to someone thinking about him today.

The Count of Monte Cristo - Terrific story. Rollicking, complex, multi layered. I like it an awful lot but it's not my favourite book. For me, the storytelling ebbs and flows which makes sense if we think about how long it took Dumas to write it. Definitely worth reading.

Journals (1889 - 1949) - Beautiful diary writing. Emotional and evocative. It's lovely to hear Gide's voice take shape over the years. Gorgeous language.

Metropolis Monologues + Who I'm Doing This For | Meat Market 24/02/2026

I'm very excited to be working with the wonderful team at Melbourne Writers Theatre again.

As part of this year's program, we're premiering a new work by Melbourne playwright Peter Farrer, "Who I'm Doing This For" which is a dark and challenging look at the complex relationships between a father, son and partner.

Definitely the most challenging role I've taken on.

Coupled with another season of Metropolis Monologues, it'll be a fabulous night of fresh, vibrant local theatre.
