Roe v. Wade: Abortion rights under attack in the USA - Internationalist Standpoint 25/06/2022

This article was written last month before the Supreme Court Decision to overturn Roe v. Wade was confirmed.

"The Roe v. Wade ruling came at a time of historic societal upheaval, on the back of working class struggle following a leftward shift around the world, and in the US in particular following the civil rights and anti-Vietnam war movements.

It is not only possible through active mass opposition to enact change, but it is in fact the only way change can happen. This is why it’s crucial that working class people of all genders and races come together to fight against the reactionary agenda of the right. Students, community organisations, labour unions and working class people more broadly banding together is necessary to beat back these attacks."

In light of the explosion and fire that erupted at the Ukranian nuclear power plant in Zaporizhia on March 4th, our Greek Cothinker Electra Kleitsa wrote a fantastic article exploring the future of nuclear power.

The article explores the idea of whether nuclear power truly is a green energy solution to the crisis of global warming, exasperated by the war in the Ukraine. It concludes:

‘A genuine, sustainable and environmentally friendly solution to the problem of energy sufficiency, not only for Europe but for the whole planet, is not possible within the framework of the system of profit and greed. Only a society operating on the basis of the needs of the majority and respecting nature, is able to organise an alternative to the multinationals of profit and environmental destruction.’

In the spirit of International Women's Day on March 8th, One of our co-thinkers from Turkey, Ecehan Balta, wrote a compelling look at the history of women's oppression. In it she examines when in history we first began to see signs of the oppression of women and what may have prompted these changes to society. She also looks at the socialist literature to see what they have to say about the relation of women's oppression to capitalism. She observes that:

'Marxists on the other hand don’t reduce the importance of women and LGBTQI+ oppression to the class issue. They don’t consider gender oppression as of minor importance. Instead they identify the root of the race, s*x and any other oppressions to class relations.'

Class and gender struggles are intertwined and related. In challenging one we are challenging the other. We stand in solidarity with our sisters in calling for an end to the oppression of women.
