Once your course is laid, you will tamp it very hard with a tamp.

This is to compress the earth mixture into one solid, compressed unit.

You want an even mix of clay, sand, and gravel in your bags, which is approximately 33% of each material.

But can stretch to as low as 10% clay, 90% course sand and gravel, which makes earthbags one of the largest windows of usable fill material in the earthbuilding world.

New builders will also want to add around 5% portland cement or lime to your mix, to chemically bind all the material to each other.

Barbed wire is then laced on top of the freshly tamped layer, to add tensile strength to the building to help resist movement and earthquakes, and also help the bags hold onto each other, especially in the top third of the dome, where the bags want to fall into the center as you’re laying them.

Your finished wall width must not fall below 10% of your internal floor diameter, to allow enough overlap of the bags to prevent them from falling inward in the top third of the dome.

A 4mt diameter dome must not fall below 400mm, or a 9ft dome must not fall below 10inces

Each layer successively gets smaller and smaller, until it eventually closes.
