With the increasing costs of materials and lack of supply, builders are feeling the squeeze on their profit margins now more than ever.

Master Builders Victoria has noted that Australia is facing its “worst materials shortage in more than 40 years”. Following the worst of the Coronavirus pandemic, construction materials have experienced the same supply and demand problems as everything else. Timber and steel increases in the range of 40-70% conservatively only increased when the war in Ukraine pushed up the prices of Russian timber.
The Victorian State Government rejected the industry’s plea to pass along the increased costs to customers who have signed fixed price building contracts. As a result, we are likely to see builders cutting corners more frequently and an increase in defective building works as they try to make ends meet.
