This is no accident, there's a reason the motto for the project is "Genre is a dirty word". It's my firm believe that all the best recorded music is made by bands and artists that are difficult to categorize, artists that don't place the limitations of any "genre" on their style. Even if they have a very distinctive and somewhat uniform sound the best artists have always drawn from many varied inf
luences. Especially in these days when so much music is created in a very formulaic way recycling much of the same beats and sound it's even more important that new artists continue to push boundaries and explore. In the case of the Kandinsky Opera project there is now a core band line-up built around vocalist George Ginis, guitarist Tony Evans and yours truly handling programming and production. The song writing is very much a collaborative effort and tailored to each song with little regard to steering the direction in favour of any particular “genre”; it's all about letting the song dictate and the lead vocalist is chosen the same way. As for reproducing the recorded sound live when the time comes each show will be structured and guided by the available line-up. The song list will be chosen accordingly, some songs will sound very much like the recorded version while the arrangements and treatment of some songs will inevitably change. Even though one informs the other; I view recording and live performance as separate art forms and that's the very reason and basis for the existence of Kandinsky Opera. I'm very excited about the results of the recordings to date and very much looking forward to seeing the live performances evolve as well. Just a heads up, I will be in the audience not on stage; I'm a studio guy not a live performer, I'll leave that part to the 'real' musicians ;)
