Can you truly call yourself a Melburnian if you've never ordered the corned beef hash or French Toast at Auction Rooms, North Melbourne?

The large beams and open spaces of the former WB & Ellis auction rooms is a Melbourne hospitality institution and it is often cited as one of the best cafes in Melbourne.

Can you even call yourself Melburnian if you don't have a happy memory of Chapel Street?

Me? I've shopped at Country Road, went on dates at Caffe e Cucina, seen movies at the Jam Factory and went clubbing at Revolver!

So I had a lot of fun exploring the 'past, present and future' of this iconic street as part of a Australia Conference walking tour with Stonnington City Council.

We kicked off the morning at Prahran Historical Society before winding through Greville Street on the way to Prahran Square (remember when it was an ugly supermarket carpark??).

Then, it was time for hot jam donuts and coffee at the beautiful Prahran Market (because you can’t walk on an empty stomach), before getting the lowdown on what’s next for the precinct from Matt Lanigan at Chapel Street Precinct.

We ended the tour at the glamorous Beverly, a stunning rooftop bar and restaurant with panoramic views across Stonnington and Melbourne.
