What is dry needling? 🤔
Dry needling is a targeted treatment technique used to address muscular pain and movement restriction.
Using a fine filament needle, we stimulate specific trigger points within tight or overactive muscles. This can help reduce pain, improve mobility and support recovery.
You may feel a brief muscle twitch or deep ache during treatment. This is normal and often a good sign the muscle has responded.
What can it help with?
✅ Neck pain
✅ Back pain
✅ Shoulder pain
✅ Headaches
✅ Persistent muscular tightness
At Eastern Region Osteopathy, dry needling is integrated into a structured treatment and rehabilitation plan. It is not a standalone fix, but one tool we use to help you move and feel better long term.

If your shoulder blade sticks out or feels unstable when you lift your arm, your serratus anterior might be underworking 👀
Try these 3 simple moves:
1️⃣ **Single Arm Wall Slides** – Forearm on the wall, gently slide up while keeping your shoulder blade flat against your ribs. Think “reach and wrap” instead of shrug.
2️⃣ **Serratus Wall Taps** – Lightly tap the wall while pushing through your shoulders. Feel your shoulder blades glide forward, not pinch back.
3️⃣ **Banded Serratus Wall Slide with Roller** – Band around your wrists + roller on the wall. Slide up while pressing out into the band. Slow and controlled = 🔥
Focus on control, not speed. If your neck is doing all the work, reset and slow down.
Strong shoulder blades = stronger, pain-free shoulders 🙌

The Optimistic Osteopath
What do you do when your role becomes redundant due to covid lockdowns, no-one is hiring and the economic outlook is uncertain and bleak?
Remain optimistic, start your own business and develop this into a thriving practice incorporating three other osteopaths and a myotherapist, in an amazingly short space of time.
This was the situation faced by Ryan Turner, proprietor of Eastern Region Osteopathy, whom I had the pleasure of interviewing recently.
After completing a Bachelor of Health Science and Masters of Osteopathy in 2018, Ryan commenced work in Heathmont as an osteopath until 2020 when Covid19 enacted some of its damage to sectors of the community.
With people reticent to venture out for medical assistance and uncertainty looming thick in the air, it was a difficult time to find another osteopath role. Undaunted, Ryan found alternative work in Aged Care but there remained a fierce desire to develop his own private practice, based on the knowledge that a good osteopath plays a major role in reducing pain and helping people overcome injury.
Whilst working full time in Aged Care, Ryan rented his own premises in September 2020 as Covid stage 4 restrictions were lifted and started working there two days per week. As his private practice grew, he was able to reduce his Aged Care workload.
Eventually, the private practice became his full-time role.
In February 2023, the practice moved to its current site in Croydon and has been joined by a Myotherapist and three Osteopaths.
When asked of his secrets to success, Ryan advised there are several ingredients and not one single, silver bullet.
A passion for work. It is very rewarding to reduce pain and assist people to overcome their injuries.
Build loyalty and trust – don’t overtreat! The main objective is to treat the issue effectively and as quickly as possible. Ryan provided an example where he treated a painter with wrist pain and cysts due to repetitive stress and the ailment was resolved in one session.
Build a strong rapport with patients. The mental aspect of pain is also extremely important and showing a genuine interest in people helps ameliorate this.
Network well and utilize community connections such as sporting clubs, where Ryan has a strong involvement.
This is a fantastic example where a business owner has followed their dream and turned a precarious situation into one of overwhelming success.
