Quercus Trio

Last year we were lucky enough to receive an amazing new horn trio by Melody Eötvös - composer, commissioned by the wonderful Continuo Communityinuocommunity. We premiered the trio at the very special Port Fairy Spring Music Festival in 2024 and are delighted to be performing the Melbourne premiere on Tuesday March 25th in Hanson Dyer Hall. Melody's trio is titled "Shivelight," inspired by a word first used by the poet Gerard Manley Hopkins, who coined the term to describe the shafts of light that pierce and filter through the foliage and canopies of trees. We are deeply inspired by trees and the natural environment, and took this as a launching point to craft the program for this concert. The opening theme for Johannes Brahms' masterful Horn Trio famously came to him whilst walking in the forests around Baden Baden in Germany, making it a natural thematic pairing with the Eotvos. We round off the program with the very exciting "Walden," literally "forests" by Swiss composer Daniel Schnyder.
