Last week of ideas from our pro-paper-post. We’d love to read your experiences of down-digital moments of intentional reading with your young one. Trialing new recipes together from cookbooks? Reading Christmas cards before packing them away? What’s been your pick?

Read your peers, passion & piece. Expanding the breadth of reading material is a great place for families to encourage screen-free reading experiences. There are so many clever, cool and creative volumes aimed straight at eager young readers - perhaps start with The.INmag, National Geographic Kids, OKIDO and see where the breadcrumbs lead!

The latest Common Chronicle post adds 'MAGAZINES' this week to your repertoire of ideas.

But what are kids supposed to know by the end of this year? Here’s how this week’s idea links to the English Curriculum Standards -

End of Foundation: “They name the letters of the English alphabet and know and use the most common sounds (phonemes) represented by these letters (graphs)”

End of Grade 1: “They blend short vowels, common long vowels, consonants and digraphs to read one-syllable words”

End of Grade 2: “They use phonic and morphemic knowledge, and grammatical patterns to read unfamiliar words and most high-frequency words”
