🔥 What is a BAL Rating – and why does it matter?

A Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) rating is an essential step in understanding how vulnerable your home or building project is to bushfire threats.
A BAL assessment measures exposure to the three main bushfire impacts:
> Ember attack
> Radiant heat
> Direct flame contact

Using the method set out in AS 3959, a BAL rating is assigned based on vegetation, slope, and distance from the risk. The result? A clear indication of the potential radiant heat your property could face – measured in kilowatts per square metre (kW/m²).

BAL ratings range from BAL–Low (low risk) to BAL–FZ (Flame Zone) (extreme risk).

For instance, BAL–12.5 means your home may experience up to 12.5 kW/m² of radiant heat. Knowing your BAL rating early helps guide construction choices – and ensures compliance while reducing the chance of loss during a bushfire event.

➡️ Pro tip: Don’t wait until later stages of your project to assess your BAL – it can affect your design, materials, and even project feasibility.
