WHY WORMING YOUR PUPPY IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS YOU CAN DO
One of the saddest realities in animal rescue is that many puppies come into care carrying a heavy burden of intestinal worms. Some are so badly affected that they are dangerously anaemic, severely malnourished, dehydrated or suffering from chronic diarrhoea. Tragically, some pass away.
Worms are not just an unpleasant inconvenience. In young puppies they can be life-threatening.
Roundworms, hookworms, whipworms and tapeworms are all common in Australia. Puppies can become infected before they are even born, through their mother’s milk, or from contaminated soil and faeces soon after birth.
These parasites compete with a growing puppy for essential nutrients and can cause:
- Poor growth and weight gain
- Pot-bellied appearance
- Diarrhoea or vomiting
- Poor coat condition
- Weakness and lethargy
- Blood loss and severe anaemia (particularly from hookworms)
- Intestinal blockages in heavy infestations
- Death in severe cases
Hookworms are especially dangerous. A heavy infestation can remove enough blood from a small puppy to cause life-threatening anaemia in only a short period of time.
The good news is that preventing this is simple.
Recommended worming schedule
- Every 2 weeks from 2 weeks of age until 12 weeks
- Then monthly from 3 to 6 months of age
- Then every 3 months for life, or as recommended by your veterinarian.
Many modern all-in-one parasite products can simplify this schedule, so speak with your veterinarian about the best option for your puppy.
Regular worming is just as important as vaccinations, good nutrition and veterinary care. Skipping treatments allows worms to build up quickly, especially in young puppies whose immune systems are still developing.
Some intestinal worms can also infect people. Children are particularly at risk because they are more likely to have close contact with puppies and contaminated soil. Regular worming, prompt removal of faeces and good hand hygiene all help reduce this risk.
At Mackay Pet Rescue Inc., every puppy receives appropriate parasite treatment before being offered for adoption. It gives them the healthy start they deserve.
A simple worming tablet costs very little, but it can save a puppy’s life.
Please don’t underestimate the importance of regular worming. It is one of the easiest and most effective ways to keep your puppy healthy, happy and growing as they should.

❤️ TOGETHER FOR SHELTER ❤️
For most of us, grabbing a bottle of shampoo, a toothbrush or a bag of dog food is something we barely think about.
For someone experiencing homelessness or escaping hardship, those same everyday items can mean the world.
At Mackay Pet Rescue Inc., we’ve seen first-hand the incredible bond between people and their pets. In the toughest of times, that loyal dog or faithful cat may be the only family they have left.
That’s why we’re proud to be supporting Together for Shelter on Thursday 6 August.
We’re asking our wonderful community to help us collect personal care items and pet supplies that will be distributed to people in need throughout our region.
Whether it’s a toothbrush, deodorant, a bag of dog food, a blanket, a lead or a favourite toy, every donation helps someone care for themselves and the companion who stands beside them through everything.
You don’t need to buy a trolley full of supplies.
One item can make a difference.
A few items can change someone’s day.
Together, they remind people that their community cares.
If you’re able to help, please drop your donations at one of our collection points or contact us to arrange collection.
Together, we can help ensure that no one has to choose between looking after themselves and looking after the pet they love.
Thank you for helping us support some of the most vulnerable members of our community—with compassion, dignity and kindness.
Small acts. Big impact. Stronger together.
