YINDJIBARNDI EXCLUSIVE NATIVE TITLE FOR NORTHERN PORTION

The Federal Court decision over the northern Yindjibarndi portion of the original Yindjibarndi / Ngarluma Native Title determination will be handed down at 9:30 am today.

Yindjibarndi won exclusive native title rights in the Yindjibarndi southern region, which was confirmed in June this year when Fortescue Metal Group’s appeal was dismissed by the High Court.

Yindjibarndi then applied to the Federal Court to have the same exclusive rights in the northern Yindjibarndi portion of the original claim area.

Previously the Yindjibarndi only had non-exclusive rights in the determination areas.

CEO of Yindjibarndi Aboriginal Corporation, Michael Woodley, said it was an important step for the Corporation to take, as it will give them more say over their ngurra in the future.

"It's always been important, its always been exclusive to the First Nation people. Take ours survival. Without our land we would not be here today. Also, applying for those variations to give us and our people every chance to go home without being questioned by anyone," he said.

The Yindjibarndi Aboriginal Corporation will televise the decision via the screen at Ganalili in the conference room. Everyone is welcome to attend.
