In 2013 I moved to Tokyo and became fascinated by the skin of local women and the products they used.

​When I think back to my first times in drug stores and departments stores within Japan, I was overwhelmed. I was constantly researching, using tools like Google translate, which at the time were patchy and left large gaps or provided incorrect translations often.
​
​I had to learn Japanese for certain terms that when directly converted were random and funny.
​
Persistence is key, and an open mind to try new things.
​
​I added lots to my cart, took it home so I could further research and understand.
​
​This is how Tokyo Beauty Book was formed. Through the desire to share my insight into J Beauty with others and offer my knowledge to the wider community.

​How did you start your journey into the world of J Beauty?

You might be wondering how Japanese beauty products stack up against western cult favourites.

I recently put Fairy Drops Scandal Queen to the test and compared it with Too Faced Better than S*x mascara.

I have tried Better than S*x before, and it was a little lack lustre. I didn’t quite understand the hype. In my research for this comparison project, I learnt that Better than S*x needs to breath to allow it to thicken before use. I have never really come across this advice, but it’s true. I opened it, gave it a few weeks before trying. It is a clumpy application, that doesn’t define each lash, it creates fullness by coating a few lashes together. The look for me is too obvious and clumsy.

In contrast to Scandal Queen, who elegantly lengthens each and every lash. The length and curl extend the eye and for everyday wear I prefer the control offered by J Beauty cult favourite. To move beyond your daily look, you can build coverage to create a heavier look and add more volume to the lash.

For me, it’s still J Beauty.
