BEC COO, David Halpin, caught up with Joel Alcorn & Chloe Middleton from Alcorn Middleton at the Australian Institute of Architects Greater Brisbane Regional Awards on Friday night. AMAO won a Commendation for their Interior Architecture at Toowong Towers - transforming a 1930s Interwar Porch & Gable home into a thoughtful, multi-generational dwelling. The project was also short-listed for the Australian Interior Design Awards.

At the most recent round of Global Plastics Treaty negotiations, world leaders did not reach consensus on measures to address plastic pollution. Reports confirm that over 220 fossil fuel lobbyists were in attendance during the talks.

According to Greenpeace, companies such as Coca-Cola collectively produce over 300 million tonnes of plastic waste each year.

Greenpeace has launched a petition calling for stronger action to stop plastic pollution at its source and reduce industry interference in future negotiations.

Congratulations to the BEC BMCC Team for their dedication & hard work, contributing to the official opening of Megalong Site 1A at 9:00am on 11 April 2025, restoring access to the Megalong Valley. This site has been nominated for the IPWEA Engineering Excellence Awards by the BMCC Director of Infrastructure.

Megalong Road had been closed for 11 months due to a landslide caused by intense rainfall, cutting off vital access for the local community, including schools and businesses.

Following coordination with NSWRA and TfNSW, works were delivered under Disaster Relief Funding Arrangements (DRFA), with a soft opening on 2 April 2025. Despite challenging conditions, the project was completed ahead of its original 12-month schedule.

The reconstruction involved innovative techniques, including geofoam blocks beneath the road pavement & the use of waler beams, with slope stabilisation using shotcrete & soil nails. Traffic was maintained via one-lane access with es**rt vehicles during key stages.

The project was a collaborative effort involving multiple stakeholders & strong community engagement. Final minor works are on track for completion by 30 May, with a site visit from the Minister for Roads expected later this month.
