The reason students do not value showing their working is because there is a an absence of an authentic audience member (one other than the teacher grading). Providing problems that are contentious and collaborative shifts the view that doing maths is providing answer after answer to question after question, to a view that maths is producing texts of reason, intended for validation/ scrutiny from an audience.
