A driver does not immediately become high-risk the moment they close their eyes.
The risk developed earlier, often well before any visible sign of drowsiness appeared. By the time head nodding or long eyelid closures (LECs) appear, the window to intervene is almost closed.
Most fatigue monitoring technologies rely on these late-stage indicators. Such systems detect impairment only after it has already reached a critical level.
Our latest Insights article looks at why early-stage detection changes the equation, and how predictive monitoring (powered by the Johns Drowsiness Scale) gives supervisors time to act before driver error occurs, rather than responding once it has.
Why early detection of drowsiness risk is essential in mining operations - Optalert On a mine site, risk is elevated long before an operator closes their eyes. The risk begins earlier, during the progressive build-up of drowsiness-related impairment.
