A clinical trial is underway for a new treatment for coeliac disease, an autoimmune condition affecting less than two per cent of Australians.
There is no cure and currently, the only treatment is a strict, lifelong adherence to a gluten-free diet, however, the Wesley Hospital in Brisbane is attempting to find a breakthrough by trying to "turn off the cells that are part of the aberrant pathway" using two doses of a new molecule.
