A college I used to attend was well known as Jock Central. The college, Erindale College, was home to many brilliant athletes, as it ran a program called the Talented Sports program.
One of those individuals was a baller that I used to look up to. He played basketball, and the college team was one of the best at the time in the ACT. Of course, you couldn't match the greatness of Lake Ginninderra and Johnny Gladwin, but that's another story.
I used to watch all the Erindale College home games and just admired the chemistry of the team. The likes of the extraordinary point guard Lee Schuster and Gareth Smith throwing down dunks were a sight to see.
Watching him was one of the reasons I finally took the leap and started playing the game myself.
Fast forward 33 years, and now we’re playing in the same league at Fredcom Basketball.
Funny how life works. The people who inspire you early on sometimes come back around and remind you how far you’ve come. One thing hasn’t changed, though: the love for the game never dies. 🏀
Note: Gareth Smith, aka Gazza, also plays in this league and made an impressive debut with 9 of 11 3-pointers, 16 rebounds, and a total score of 35.
