Why is fibre a warm hug for your horse in winter? It has to do with the body heat fermentation produces...

As fibre is fermented in the hindgut it naturally produces body heat. Keeping plenty of quality fibre in their diet improves fermentation, which helps horses maintain warmth, supports digestive health, energy and condition through the colder months.

Fibre has a higher heat increment (HI) than grains, which do not produce a lot of body heat when consumed. It also provides slow-release energy for healthy conditioning making it an essential part of a balanced winter ration.

As a guide, horses should be eating 1.5–2% of their bodyweight in forage each day. For a 500kg horse, that’s around 7.5–10kg of hay or fibre sources daily.
